Wilmington – Attorney General Beau Biden announced today that his office is sponsoring foreclosure open houses next week in locations statewide to assist homeowners who are behind on mortgage payments, facing foreclosure, or have questions about homeowner resources that are available. These free events, hosted by the Attorney General’s Foreclosure Prevention Office, will be held at the following times and locations:

Tuesday, June 5

“Our open houses are being offered to help consumers who have fallen behind on mortgage payments, are facing foreclosure, or having difficulty engaging with their lender in a meaningful conversation about their loan,” Attorney General Biden said. “We’re making sure that homeowners in communities across our state have an opportunity to meet with our knowledgeable staff to understand the foreclosure process, be aware of their rights, and have access to all of the assistance available to them.”

At each open house, staff from the Attorney General’s office will discuss the foreclosure timeline, provide tips on avoiding foreclosure scams, review state and federal programs for homeowners, and brief Delawareans on the national mortgage settlement and the ongoing federal review of 2009-2010 foreclosures. Additionally, staff may be able to assist homeowners who are having difficulty reaching their lender to discuss repayment options or other alternatives to foreclosure.

The office of foreclosure prevention and financial education was established last fall through legislation proposed by Attorney General Biden and Representatives Helene Keeley, John Kowalko, Robert Gilligan and Mike Ramone and Senator Bethany Hall-Long. Part of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit, this office is a key point of contact for consumers and is equipped to advise homeowners on their rights at every stage of the foreclosure process and direct them to available resources and information they need to make educated decisions.
